Crossword solver
Type the letters you already have, with a ? (or a space) for each missing one, such as "c?o?s", and see every word of that length that fits, common words first.
Type a ? (or a space, dot or underscore) for each missing letter, and a * for any number of letters, as in *ology.
The length is a check: set it to the number of squares and you'll be told if the pattern doesn't match. Letters that can't be in the answer are kept out of the gaps only, not out of the letters you typed.

How the crossword solver works
When a crossword answer is half filled in, the letters from the words that cross it tell you a lot. The solver takes those letters and their positions, and checks every word of the right length in a dictionary of 273,766 words. Everyday words come first, because most crossword answers are familiar, followed by rarer words and variants that setters sometimes need to make a corner work.
It doesn't read clues and has no list of past answers. It is a pattern tool: you bring the meaning, it brings the spellings, which is often all you need to see the answer.
Worked example: how each letter narrows it down
A five-letter answer, filled in one crossing letter at a time:
| Pattern | Words that fit | Everyday words |
|---|---|---|
| ????? | 12,549 | 3,431 |
| C???? | 896 | 277 |
| C?O?? | 100 | 33 |
| C?O?S | 24 | 11 |
Three known letters take 12,549 five-letter words down to 24. If the clue is about birds, you would already be looking at CROWS, and telling the solver the answer must contain a W leaves 3: CHOWS, CLOWS, CROWS.
More patterns to try
| Pattern | Words | Everyday words, for example |
|---|---|---|
| ?R?W? | 34 | BRAWL, BRAWN, BREWS, BROWN, BROWS |
| ??LL? | 139 | BELLS, BELLY, BILLS, BULLS, BULLY |
| S???E | 196 | SALVE, SAUCE, SCALE, SCARE, SCENE |
| B?R? | 40 | BARB, BARD, BARE, BARK, BARN |
| *OLOGY | 506 | ANTHOLOGY, ANTHROPOLOGY, APOLOGY, ARCHAEOLOGY, ASTROLOGY |
| UN*ABLE | 419 | UNABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCOUNTABLE, UNANSWERABLE, UNATTAINABLE |
| P*ZZ* | 72 | PIZZA, PIZZAS, PUZZLE, PUZZLED, PUZZLES |
When you don't know the length: the *
Most of the time the grid tells you the length, but a * is handy for themed answers, for checking a word family, or for a clue you only half remember. A * matches any run of letters, including none. *OLOGY finds 506 words, such as APOLOGY, BIOLOGY, ECOLOGY, and UN*ABLE finds 419, such as UNABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCOUNTABLE. Set the answer length as well and a * pattern keeps only words of that size.
Answer lengths
Most American-style daily crosswords use a 15 by 15 grid in which every answer has at least three letters and every square belongs to two answers, one across and one down. That's why crossing letters help so much. Here is how many words of each length the solver knows, and how many of them are everyday words:
| Length | Words | Everyday words |
|---|---|---|
| 3 letters | 1,299 | 474 |
| 4 letters | 5,464 | 1,857 |
| 5 letters | 12,549 | 3,431 |
| 6 letters | 22,297 | 5,256 |
| 7 letters | 33,124 | 6,679 |
| 8 letters | 40,459 | 6,498 |
| 9 letters | 41,092 | 5,375 |
| 10 letters | 35,744 | 4,014 |
| 12 letters | 20,388 | 1,450 |
| 15 letters | 5,807 | 116 |
Tips when you are stuck
- Fill in the crossings first. Solve the easier words that cross a hard one; every letter you add cuts the list down sharply, as the table shows.
- Check the tense and number. A clue in the past tense often wants an -ED ending, and a plural clue usually wants a final S.
- Doubt a letter? Turn it back into a ? and see if a better answer appears. One wrong crossing letter is the most common reason nothing fits.
- Watch for abbreviations in the clue, such as "abbr." or a shortened word: the answer is usually short too.
Unscrambling a jumble instead? Use the word unscrambler or the anagram solver. For tile games, the word finder ranks words by score, and for five-letter guessing games, try the 5-letter word finder. When you'd like a different kind of puzzle, there is sudoku, a word search maker and solitaire.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a word with missing letters?
Type the letters you have in order, with a ? for every square you don't know. "c?o?s" means five letters: C first, O third and S last. The solver lists every word that fits, everyday words first.
Can it solve a crossword clue?
No. It fills in letter patterns; it doesn't read clues or look up answers. Think about what the clue means, then use the pattern to find words of the right shape and pick the one that matches the clue.
What does the * do?
A * stands for any number of letters, including none, so you can search without knowing the length. "*ology" finds 506 words ending in OLOGY, and "un*able" finds words that start with UN and end with ABLE.
What do "must contain" and "can't contain" do?
Must contain keeps only words that have those letters somewhere (type a letter twice to require two). Can't contain keeps those letters out of the empty squares, which helps when you have ruled letters out, while still allowing any letters you typed in the pattern.
How many words fit c?o?s?
24 words in this dictionary, 11 of them everyday words: CHOPS, CHOWS, CLODS, CLOGS, CLOTS, COOKS, COOLS, COOPS, CROPS, CROSS, CROWS.
Does it find phrases or two-word answers?
It finds single words only. For a multi-word answer, solve each word on its own pattern, for example the first word as "?a?" and the second as "s???e".
