15 words (3 to 15 letters each, up to 40). Spaces, hyphens and accents are dropped in the grid.
Word letters fills the gaps only with letters from your words, so the words blend in: a harder puzzle.
A line under the title, for handing out to a class or a group.
Print at 100% or "Actual size". The copied link keeps the grid settings, not your words or title. Your current puzzle is kept in this browser only.

Features
Your own words
Spelling lists, vocabulary, names for a party or a theme for a rainy day: up to 40 words in a grid from 10×10 to 20×20.
Answer key included
Page two of the PDF rings every word, with the filler letters faded, for quick marking.
Checked puzzles
Words cross only on shared letters, and the filler is checked so it doesn't spell your words a second time, or anything rude.
Print or play
Letter or A4 paper, capitals or small letters; or drag across the words on a phone, tablet or computer.
How many words fit
The right number of words depends on the grid size and on the directions you allow. To give real numbers, we ran the generator on this page 20 times for each combination, with everyday words averaging 5.7 letters (fruits and vegetables such as apple, banana, cherry, grape). The table shows the most words, in steps of five, that fitted every single time:
| Grid | Squares | Across and down only | All eight directions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10×10 | 100 | 15 words | 10 words |
| 12×12 | 144 | 20 words | 20 words |
| 15×15 | 225 | 35 words | 35 words |
| 18×18 | 324 | 40 words | 40 words |
| 20×20 | 400 | 40 words | 40 words |
Those are maximums, packed tight (and 40 is the most words the maker takes). For a puzzle that is fun rather than crowded, aim for a bit over half of them: around 10 words on a 12×12 grid for younger children, 15 to 20 on a 15×15 for older students and adults. Longer words need bigger grids: a 15-letter word needs at least a 15×15 grid, and Auto picks a size that fits your list.
Making a good puzzle for a class
- Match the directions to the age. Early readers do best with words running across and down only; switch to small letters (abc) if that is what they are learning to read. Add diagonals for confident readers, and backwards words for a real challenge.
- Use the lesson's words. Spelling lists, science vocabulary or names from a book make the search a review: students read each word several times while hunting for it.
- Watch for words inside words. If the list has both CAT and CATERPILLAR, CAT can be found twice. The maker points these out so you can decide.
- Keep the key separate. The answer key is page two of the PDF: print page one for the class and keep page two for marking.
- Add name and date lines when the sheets will be handed in.
Theme ideas
Seasons and holidays (fall, winter, Thanksgiving, Halloween), a unit of study (the solar system, the water cycle, US states, parts of a plant), a party (baby shower, birthday, retirement, a family reunion with everyone's names), or a hobby (garden flowers, birds, baseball terms). Twelve to twenty words on one theme makes a puzzle that holds attention without dragging on.
How to solve a word search
Pick a word with an unusual letter, such as a Q, Z, X, J or K, and scan the grid for that letter first: there are far fewer of them than vowels. When you find it, look at the eight letters around it for the word's second letter, then follow the line. Double letters (the PP in APPLE, the OO in BOOK) also stand out. Work row by row with a finger or a ruler on paper, and cross words off the list as you go. On screen, drag from the first letter to the last, or tap one and then the other; found words are ringed in color and crossed off the list.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a word search with my own words?
Type or paste your words into the box, one per line. The puzzle updates as you type. Choose the size and directions, then download the PDF or play it on screen. Nothing is uploaded: the puzzle is made in your browser.
How many words should a word search have?
For a 15×15 grid, 15 to 20 words is a comfortable puzzle; the table on this page shows the most words of about six letters that fit each size. More words make a denser, harder grid; fewer leave more filler letters to search through.
Why did some of my words not fit?
The grid is too small for the number or length of the words, or the directions are limited. Choose a bigger grid or Auto, allow diagonal words, or remove a few words. Words that don't fit are listed above the buttons, and left off the printed word list.
Can I use phrases with spaces, like "ice cream"?
Yes. The word list shows "ice cream" as you typed it, and the grid hides ICECREAM without the space. Hyphens, apostrophes and accents are dropped in the grid the same way.
Are my words saved or shared?
Your current puzzle is kept in this browser so a reload doesn't lose it, and nowhere else. The Copy link button shares only the grid settings (size, directions, letter case), never your words or title.
What makes a word search easier or harder?
Easier: across and down only, capital letters, a small grid with few words. Harder: diagonal and backwards words, a big grid, and filler letters taken from the words themselves, so the real words don't stand out.
